During our trip in the USA this summer we planed to go to Washington DC as well. We had heard that you could rent biks to acces all the historic places and that was our plan as well. We left Outer Banks very early in the morning and the plan was to reach Washington DC at lunch time. The traffic on 95 and 395 was just terrible so we had to make a long D-ture to avoid the worst part. We were several hours late. It was supposed to be a 6 hour drive but it took us probably 10 or 11h so we arrived late in the afternoon and the firs stop was the Arlington National Cemetery
We saw a lot of scouts visiting the cemetery.
It was a special feeling and everybody showed a lot of respect. We could also see several families that whent to actually visit some relatives.
We went up and saw the Kennedy grave.
After some hours on the site we wanted to go back to the car and find the hotel we had booked. In the picture below you will get a view hot it looks and where we went.
The places with the red marking was the main things to see the next day.
This is the Lincoln memorial from the backside. It is quite impressing building and especial when you walk around thous columns.
The next day we went to town with the train but we went of the metro one station to early, We came of at the Metro center close to the Ronald Regan Building and had to walk a few blocks until we came to the green open areas. I spotted this man on the way their and fell in love to the light in the passage and his relaxed personality. It was very hot and I was surprised he was sitting there smoking a cigar with his jacket on??
When we came out in the middle we could see the United States Capitolin at one end
And if you turn the other way you see the Washington Monument. It look like its close but it is not, It's just so huge. We decides to go to the Capitol Building first.
it's not as close as you think and even if you have a bike it takes a while to get close.
This is the side facing to the Washington Monument
This is the other side. It was not possible to walk thous stairs
You see a lot of guards and a lot of big black cars like Chevy Suburbans with very dark windows. Just like in the movies. I was expecting Trump walking down ans say hello but no one came to see me.
I got Johan and Anna to pose a little.
Let's go to the center and the Washington monument.
This monument took a while to build and a lot of discussion of different stones to use but it was finaly ready 1885. It is impressive with it's 170 meter.
The next stop was the World War II memorial. The weather was now starting to act a little strange with dark clouds starting to role in. It made a special feeling walking around there.
Now you start see the Lincoln Memorial.
It's not until you get close that you feel how huge it is. It was built between 1915-1922 as a memory of Abraham Lincoln
This is so cool.
Out side on the stairs stood a man Preaching loud and hi for everybody to listen.
If you turn the other way on the stairs you will see the Lincoln memorial Reflection Pool and the Whasington Monument but I also managed to get some of the top of the Capitol as well.
Minutes later we got caught in a very heavy rain shower. It was first refreshing but after a little while a little bit coold.
When the rain was slowing down we took our bikes back and thought we had a lovely day. A lot of history and quite interesting visite. Washington DC was worth while a visit and we could probably stays several more days to visited a lot more historical places but we got a little taste of it this first time. We took the train back to the hotel and early next morning we drowe further north on our trip.
